An artist finds a beautiful way of depicting his views on issues like the earth, environment and life. Chris Cicala, an Orland Park artist, shapes steel into stunning structures. His small steel sculpture collections have a few creations that stand nearly 9 feet tall. Dedicate solely to the earth and its resources, is his collection called Terra Firma, or "solid earth" in Latin. Depicting his stay in Orland Park and watching 160 acres of his parents' farmland become developed was the “AmericanHistory S” collection that was put for exhibit at the Orland Park Public Library last year.

One of the pieces from the Terra Firma collection called the "Bill and Basil Memorial" is already on display at the library and would be seen until May 28. Cicala's most-prized creations that he started in 2007 and succeeded in completing earlier this year is a tribute to artists William M. Brincka and C. Basil Cross. It is made of steel and boasts color pieces of items found in the garden including roots, leaves, flowers and butterflies. Brincka was an instructor who taught Cicala at the Art Institute of Chicago, and Cross was the European antiquities expert at Marshall Fields for 35 years. Most of the Terra Firma collection will go on display at the library on April 1.
