A large volcano is lurking just underneath the surface of the Mediterranean south of Sicily! The Italian scientists discovered this volcano while exploring the underwater remnants of an island. This island caused an international dispute in 1831, according to The Independent.

As the island rose above the surface, Britain, France and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies claimed it, with the British naming it Graham Island, the French, Giulia and the Sicilians Ferdinandea. The island collapsed and the dispute was rendered moot.
But, do you know that the island is actually a peak of a much larger horseshoe-shaped volcano?! This is what Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology Professor Giovanni Lanzafame and his colleagues found. After all the lust of possessing it the researchers named it Empedocles -- after a Greek philosopher who lived in Sicily.
