Paignton Zoo, the home to thousands of amazing animals and plants, has been conserving our global wildlife heritage and inspiring visitors to respect animals and the environment since 1923. Now, the zoo goes a step further to benefit the animals and Mother Nature. In an attempt to reduce its carbon footprint and provide fresh and healthy food to the animals, Paignton has started growing rocket, small baby chard, kale, spinach etc., just a few minutes away.

The food is being grown on-site, and that too in a sustainable way. Vertical farming is what they look toward to feed the animals. Built by a Canadian company, the vertical growing system concept is installed on a small patch of land and grows food in a more affordable manner. The 3-meter-high system is capable of growing 11,200 plants using less amounts of water. It has cut the zoo’s food requirements by nearly 10 percent. See a tour to Paignton’s vertical farm here.
