Olive oil, one of the glories of the Mediterranean cuisine was used as fuel for foundries during 2000 BC. Defying the old believe that the Mediterranean's first foundries were fuelled by charcoal; Italian archaeologists believe this as cyprus was found in these age old foundries.

The Italians unearthed copper-smelting ovens dating back to 2,000 BC, while exploring a dig site in southern Cyprus. This region is already known to have yielded the oldest wine and silk in the Mediterranean. They found the walls to be covered with thick, black resin. Samples of the mysterious pitch-like substance sent back to Rome from the site were found to be the burnt residue of olive oil.
