MIT mechanical engineer Amos Winter, pursuing a doctorate in mechanical engineering, has developed the Leveraged Freedom Chair (LFC) for the developing nations especially. Since the needy wheelchair users always call for that extra care and reduced efforts for mobility, the LFC enables one to steer through roughest of terrains without too much physical exertion. Made from available bicycle parts, the machine is better than the conventional wheelchairs and hand driven tricycles.

It employs chain driven engineering and detachable levers to travel faster on the sandy roads and muddy walking paths. The lever drivetrain asks one to utilize upper body strength to travel 10 to 20 percent faster on tarmac than a conventional wheelchair. The user can change gears by moving his hands on the levers.
