Washington-based designer Auram Freese-Desforges plans to turn a ten-acre lot in Middlesex, VT, into a beacon of sustainable design with the erection of a green building on the site. The building will aim to serve the local community within eco-friendly constraints and provisions. Auram completed the project for Yestermorrow School's Certificate in Sustainable Building and Design.

The proposed construction will utilize a permaculture system and a full community design with homes, apartments, markets, offices, community spaces, and a bakery/café. A 1,500 square feet community space is reserved for community-based events, dinner, movies, meetings, etc. An 800 square foot kitchen features a glass facade on the southeast corner, which acts as a small greenhouse and heightens the R-value of the glazing. A rentable, approximately 1,600 square feet office space also features double-glazing for greenery and insulation. The glazed façade reduces the need for air conditioning. A large vertical living machine will be there to filter all of the building's gray water.

The second floor also touts glazed-in, unconditioned space in front of the apartments. Composting toilets line up to go directly down to the basements into the composting systems. Such an arrangement will totally eliminate black water and also, provide on-site fertilizer for greenhouses.
