New York based non-profit organization Terreform led by architect Michael Sorkin has prepared a project called the New York City (steady) state, to transform New York into a more eco-friendly city. The project explores the possibilities of reducing the city ecological footprint by making it self sufficient within its existing political boundaries.

The plan thoroughly studies the problems faced by NY City’s most relevant mechanisms comprising food, energy, waste management and transportation. It offers proactive approach that includes architectural design innovation; measures to increase local food production and various other engineering solutions to help the city economize and handle its material resources usefully to promote urban self reliance.

The plan envisages sustainable houses using solar power and other renewable energy sources, grey water tanks for rainwater collections, green vehicles, mass rapid transportation and green patches for food production within the city. Together these promote ecological, social and environmental sustainability.

The New York City (steady) state project will be exhibited at the Venice Biennale's International Architecture Exhibition.
