Memnonia utilizes solar power to create music

memnonia solar sound art installation

Creatives at the Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI) have come up with amazing art installations that could power the world too. Memnonia (a series of solar thermal music devices) is one such artwork created by Dr. Michael Duffey (Associate Professor in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at George Washington University). The name Memnonia comes from the statue of Memnon, a famous tourist attraction in the Greco-Roman world that used to utilize the morning sun’s warmth to emit sounds.

The solar pipe organ produces melodies as it uses shadows to activate music. The self-actuating device controls the onset and duration of each sound using solar energy. Hit the jump to see the solar music installation utilizing a series of parabolic dishes to create music:

The installation sure deserves a place in our list of amazing musical contraptions that have something green about them.
