Meet the cars competing in the 2010 American Solar Challenge

When they have successfully completed scrutineering and the qualifier, the selected teams out of 17 international teams from Canada, Germany, Taiwan and United States will wrestle at the 2010 American Solar Challenge for the solar car supremacy. The on-road challenge will expose their solar-powered cars to an 1100-mile drive from Broken Arrow, OK to Naperville, IL. Here we introduce you to some of the cars that are trying to make it to the final list:

Created by Hochschule Bochum University of Applied Science, it is one of the most beautiful cars in the world. The Solar WorldNo.1 was originally built for the WSC 2007. It has earlier taken 3rd place in the American Solar Challenge 2008. Now, the 483 lbs car gets packed with AZUR SPACE 3G gallium arsenide solar cell and a carbon fiber chassis for maximum speed and low weight.

The 3rd place winner at the Formula Sun Grand Prix 2009, the Northwestern University’s solar car team has supplied their 624 lbs Nusolarsc5 with mono silicon (Sunpower A-300) solar cells for the ASC.

Equipped with Sunpower C50 solar cells and a Carbon Monocoque, the Stanford University's Apogee solar car was placed 4th in its class and 10th overall in the recent Global Green Challenge in Australia.
