Mia Lambinicio is an Industrial Design Student from the Philippines. Her furniture creation titled 'Medusa Stool' is a very innovative product made out of scrap strips of bamboo. The Medusa Stool has a low seat that is made out of bamboo strips joined to each other to form a circular platform and a central column that actually has the bamboo strips turning outwards to create the many legs of the stool - resembling the jellyfish or Medusa. The cushion of the stool is made out of stuffing that comprises of scraps of fabric.

Bamboo is a sustainable building material that is majorly used in this furniture piece. The demand for bamboo furniture is increasing rapidly as people are becoming more conscious about the environment and reducing their carbon footprint. Bamboo is actually a grass and not a tree and can grow very rapidly to a height of around 100 feet tall. The natural grain of bamboo wood is very appealing and bamboo works just as well as hardwood when it comes to making furniture designs.
Although bamboo is hollow and lightweight - it still is quite sturdy and durable and can withstand years of wear and tear. Mia's Medusa Stool is a great example of how bamboo can be carved and molded in order to made a very neat and modern creation that you may find in hard wood. The usage of scrap bamboo makes this piece a must-have for all the environmentalists as it is entirely made out of recycled materials.
