All places of public worship big or small should draw a lesson from a step undertaken by the authorities at Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Sungai Sala, Malaysia. The temple has gone off grid and become the first solar-powered temple in the country. The temple faced huge problems in conducting its daily prayer sessions owing to frequent power cuts and its inability to lay down a cable from the main supply owing to financial problems.

An Indian NGO, Yayasan MyNad came forward with a solution to the problem and helped install one unit of 175W PV solar panel, with an inverter that converts direct current to alternating current to six units of 18watts CFL lights in the temple. The temple is now able to perform its daily prayer sessions without any problems.
