The width of 2.1mm accounts in making this newly discovered specie world’s smallest orchid ever found. Coming from Platystele genus, which is made up of mostly miniature plants, this one has transparent petals. Dr Jost, who works for the EcoMinga Foundation, is one of the world's leading orchid hunters and has found 60 new orchids and 10 other plant species in the past decade.

The construction of new roads in the past century allowed access to some of the most remote and unspoilt forest habitats in the world, which resulted in the discovery of more than 1,000 orchid species in Ecuador. A group of 28 types of orchid, which evolved at Teagueia genus in a mountainous area near Banos, Ecuador, was perhaps the most exciting of Dr Jost's recent finds. They are part of the group that had previously been thought to be restricted to just six species.
