International studio Urban Art Projects (UAP) has completed a major art installation that transformed an existing multi-story car park into a highly sustainable, aesthetically appealing art project. The art project dubbed the ‘Landlines’ has added new life to the streetscape of Albert Street, Brisbane, through the ingenious rework. Displaying a contoured map of Cunningham’s Gap and the Main Range in Brisbane, the work is made of 549 powder-coated, laser-cut aluminum panels, all 1.2m x 3.6m.

Landlines drew inspiration from the undemocratic nature of most tall buildings, responding to how few people get the chance to take in the view from the top. The design makes a stunning view for the passersby, while it veils the unpleasant appearance of the parked cars. The work also functions practically as a solar guard and natural ventilation, allowing air to infuse the subtropical car park. This saves the client over £1million on mechanical ventilation and also brings down the carbon footprint of the structure significantly.
