Lamar Advertising Co. will convert its 1,370 billboards, from Pensacola to Daytona, and Tallahassee to Fort Myers, to solar and wind-powered renewable energy systems. A $2.5 million grant by the U.S. Department of Energy through the Florida Energy and Climate Commission and the Governor's Energy Office to the $12.5 million project has strengthened Lamar’s hopes to convert them all by April 2012. Lamar will procure the remaining $10 million.

Lamar uses recyclable polyethylene as the material for its billboards, on which printing is done with zero-VOC UV-curable inks. Lamar thinks likely to generate some 1.4 million kilowatt-hours annually from these 1,370 renewable power systems. Lamar is also sponsoring Renewable Florida, a Web-based clearinghouse that devises cost-efficient ways of maximizing renewable energy.
