Crochet has inspired Jo Hamilton, a Portland based artist, to infuse the crochet work into portraits. This intriguing concept has highlighted the tremendous potential of ‘Crochet’, bringing an altogether different dimension to portraits. So go ahead knit your memories and frame them for life!

The Artist
Jo Hamilton is the innovative artist of these crochet portraits. Having learnt how to crochet at the tender age of six from her grandmother, she has done justice to this art that is clichéd to suit the elderly and a monotonous hobby as believed. Though she is a trained painter, she has brought an incredible dimension to the timeless art of crochet.

The Inspiration
Jo Hamilton, though trained to be a professional artist, was inspired to create an infusion of crochet in portraitures after visiting The Portland Craft exhibition in 2006. Wherein, inspired arts exhibited crafts based on out-of-box art forms.

The Material
Jo Hamilton has used traditional and contemporary yarns such as worsted, silk, and cotton to make these life-like portraits.

The Artwork
After showcasing her work on this original idea, she was urged to pursue and bring more life into these portraits, all credit to her co-workers who dared her to do more. Jo Hamilton then kickstarted making portraits of persons she has observed in her day to day life. She first takes pristine photographs of the subject in mind, prints them out and based on this visual, these crochets without any stencils, graphs, patterns or any computer aided designing. Her raw and inherent talent is laudable, as she emotes and recaptures every wrinkle of the visages she captures in these yarns. Jo Hamilton knits life into her crochet portraits.

Green Aspects
These portraits are a needlework collection, with authentic and eco-friendly materials like cotton being used in these crochets. This portrait is green clean and nature-friendly!
