After taking the wraps off the world’s first solar powered sail spacecraft prototype at a news conference on Friday, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) now looks forward to launch its actual version on May 18. It will get underway with the Japan’s first Venus orbiter called as "AKATSUKI"(PLANET-C).

The space yacht named IKAROS (Interplanetary Kite-craft Accelerated by Radiation of the Sun) features 0.0075mm thick polyimide membrane on a diagonal surface of 20m. Despite scarce sunlight in space, these membranes harness enough solar energy to keep the spacecraft floating in space.
