Amid all protests, a fleet of Japanese whaling ships left for the seas of Antarctica. You must be thinking, what the protest is all about! Not just for any expedition, but for their aim to kill 850 minke whales out in the frozen sea. And it is almost double last year’s catch. That’s not all - they also desire to expand the hunt to fin whales for the first time. Launched earlier this year by the Tokyo-based Institute of Cetacean Research, the expedition is the first under a six-year research whaling program. Japan wrapped up an 18-year study of feeding and migratory habits in March, when the fleet returned from an Antarctic hunt with a haul of 440 minke. Their meat was sold to restaurants and food wholesalers. The fin whales are awaiting a similar plight after their barbarous hunts. And the whale hunters will be minting huge money out of the kills.

The World has enough for our need but not for our greed. The sight of dead carcasses floating in the sea as aftermath of the Gulf War is still fresh in my mind. Already water pollution has reached an alarming level and as if it was not enough, our greed is spelling doom for the marine life. People who relish whale-flesh, might be having a whale of time, literally, but at what cost?
