The Creators
Designers Maja Rose and Tess Lloyd founded Polli after both of them graduated as industrial designers from the University of Technology, Sydney. Polli was born out of a strong desire to blend sustainability, craft culture and fashion. Today Polli creates both home and fashion accessories.
The Inspiration
The designers at Polli, are mainly motivated by their love for design and various forms of art. They also draw inspiration from their widespread travels in their homeland Australia, as well as in America, India and Europe. Danish and Japanese paper folding designs inspires their paper-thin jewelry collection.
It is interesting to note that each of their pieces has an interesting source of inspiration, some of their pendants are designed like the tall buildings along the banks of the canals in Amsterdam, while some “Daisy Chains” hark back to childhood memories of creating the same. A thought exists behind every Polli creation!
What Makes Polli an Eco-Friendly Company?
Polli uses recycled metals like stainless steel, brass, and a range of woven products. They also use reclaimed leather in some of their creations. For instance, in their Kohl-Gold range, they have used 100% recycled brass for the “gold” pieces.
The company is earnestly committed to saving the environment and their efforts do not end with using recycled metals. Polli pays a lot of attention to minimize their carbon footprint. Polli focuses on eco-friendly manufacturing practices and as far as possible uses eco-friendly methods of traveling in its manufacturing units like walking and cycling. The Carbon Reduction Institute (CRI) rated Polli as a low-carbon company. An amount of $1 goes to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) on the sale of certain products. It purchases offsets for unavoidable air travel. The company has very recently also started using 100% recycled products for packaging purposes.
What Makes Polli Products so Special?
Polli has been awarded a low carbon rating for its purchase of offsets and other numerous green efforts. Polli’s creations also keep the needs of the user in mind. Sterling silver or gold-filled hooks are used for the earrings instead of nickel to avoid skin irritation. The finishing is done with anodized aluminum and stainless steel so it does not tarnish very easily and in case it does it can be easily cleaned with a damp soapy cloth.
About The Stunning Creations by Polli.
Polli creates fashion and home products. In jewelry they design earrings, pendants, brooches and cufflinks. For earrings and pendants they have four kinds of collection - stainless steel, kohl-gold, leather and woven. Each design is unique and intricately designed. The design aesthetic is suitable for a variety of style preferences. The designs rage from beautiful patterns in flowers and leaves to skulls that celebrate the "Day of the Dead" in Mexico, bicycles, animal figures and odd objects like typewriters which pay homage to the noisy machines of the 1950’s, buildings, carts and so on.
While the stainless steel and the kohl-gold ones have a purely metallic finish, the leather ones and the woven pieces have a varied structure. The woven pieces of jewelry was in fact born out of the designer’s wish to incorporate textures and colors in their design. The resulting “Woven” creations are vibrant and beautiful. For instance the “Dragonfly Earrings” have a frame of stainless steel and have been hand stitched in bright colors. There is the “Butterflies Necklace” which is etched from stainless steel, connected to a sterling silver chain and stitched with bright rainbow colored cotton threads!
The brooches have some interesting designs too and some have been inspired from natural phenomena like dense forest growth, concentric lines of timber and others from interesting things like the Chinese Ching coins.
