Indian Army to install windmills and solar panels at Siachen glacier

The Siachen Glacier, located in the eastern Karakoram Range in the Himalaya Mountains just east of the Line of Control between India-Pakistan will soon see windmills and solar panels generating clean energy. In an effort from the Indian Army, renewable energy will be produced at the highest battlefield of the world to bring down the on the cost of the fuel and logistic efforts, along with saving the glacier. With the installation of eco-friendly windmills and solar panels, the soldiers stationed at the glacier will no longer have to depend on upon kerosene, diesel for running generators to heat their huts and lights.

The plan for alternate energy at the Siachen glacier will come into reality with the Rs 3,000 crore grant already sanctioned by the government. The Northern Army Commander already has discussed the project with the Union Ministry for New and Renewable Energy. Plans are to set up windmills and solar panels at other frontier areas in Ladakh region also, in addition to the Siachen glacier. In addition to solar power and wind energy, the Army has a structured system of waste disposal to further reduce the pollution levels on the glacier.
