The Hyundai Blue-Will is certainly not a new name. We saw it appearing at the Seoul Motor Show last April, but the first plug-in hybrid will make its North American debut in concept form at Detroit next week. The concept features a multitude of alternative energy and eco-friendly technologies including recycled materials and solar panels integrated into the all-glass roof.

The Blue-Will brings the same Hybrid Blue Drive technology to use that Hyundai unveiled at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show. This parallel hybrid system allows the concept to run as a conventional hybrid vehicle or as a pure electric vehicle. It includes a thermal generator to convert exhaust gas heat into electricity. The concept comes equipped with a lithium polymer battery that powers a 1.6-litre direct-injected four-cylinder along with a 100kW electric motor.

The Blue-Will makes use of LED lighting to save energy. Instead of a conventional gauge cluster, the concept uses transparent Organic LEDs creating a high-resolution, ultra-thin color screen. It also has a touchscreen that provided functions like climate control, stereo control, navigation, and the transmission gear selection. But, what really stands out amongst the green features is the Eco-Coach, a graphic-based program designed to teach you to be a more economical driver. The company claims that the Blue-Will can give up to 4.2L/100km in hybrid mode and 2.2L/100km when operating as a plug-in hybrid. The Blue-Will has an all-electric operating range of 65kms.
