A terrace of 3 family houses is all set to rock at the Scotland’s Housing Expo. The Highland Housing Fair, Scotland’s first ever housing fair that is scheduled to take place in August 2010 will act as a model for future housing design and development. The main objectives of the fair are the design and construction of 55 architect designed houses, and the staging of the month long event to compliment the flagship housing development. The homes to be featured in the housing fair will focus upon high quality design, innovative technology, and the use of sustainable systems and features.

The terrace incorporates the use of solar energy in order to meet terms with the competitions theme of solar design. Designed by HLM Architects (Glasgow), the house uses a Passive House-proven timber system, together with triple-glazed energy-saving windows and a mechanical ventilation heat recovery system to keep the heating consumption of one of these 3-bed units as low as 1,430kWh/(m2a). It also features a heat pump that trim down the primary energy consumption and helps in lowering the CO2-emissions for space heating, DHW and electricity to about a fifth of a comparable house.
The energy efficient house includes Prefabricated Closed Panel Timber Frame System with prefabricated floor, wall and roof cassettes pre-insulated with 80% recycled content glasswool insulation. Locally sourced larch timber cladding from FSC sources goes into making the external walls. The garden landscape design enriches wildlife habitats, composting and providing opportunities for food production. The house is built to Passivhaus Standard.
