No one would have imagined that a challenging project started by High school students from the DMACC Building Trades program could prove to be so fruitful. Taking help from Story County Community Housing Corporation, a community-based, nonprofit corporation that works towards creating and maintaining affordable rental and family-owned housing, this bunch of youngsters took up the construction of a solar-powered house.

The students worked extremely hard in putting everything from foundation to the minutest thing in place. The new house incorporates solar panels to meet with the power requirement, while strategies to enhance energy efficiency do their bit to save on the electricity bills. Ames-based Power Film installed the thin solar film panels that will generate 25 to 30 percent of the home's power. The students have gained valuable work experience, which they could put into use while making a career in the construction field or even working on their own homes for that matter.
