Jairus Smith, a freelance product and graphic designer has created a unique mailbox that he calls the “Solar”. It seems the eco-conscious designer, who specializes in contextual research, prototyping, and fabrication has put his 3 years of experience to build a contemporary and stylish mailbox that can accommodate large packages too. The mailbox is a teak, stainless steel and concrete box that has a handbuilt top mounted solar panel behind a sheet of clear lexan.

Developed for an Atlanta client, the mailbox was completed in just 2 weeks. Special attention is given in making the numbers visible at night by the use of 5 back-lit LEDs on each side, which are powered by solar energy. It features a concrete footer that is strong enough to support the 350lb “L” shaped concrete base and the 200lb teak box. In order to store big parcels safely, the floor of the mailbox can easily be changed to the larger locking compartment.
