Eco Echoes: China Mobile sets up world’s largest solar energy base station cluster

The world’s largest solar energy-powered base station cluster has finally been completed following four years of construction. China Mobile, the leading telecommunication operator in China, initiated the project back in 2005. Tibet’s abundant solar resources are seen put into best use by the station that enhances the coverage of the regional communication.

An estimated energy output of 3,600 kilowatts-hours may be consumed annually by a common base station yielding an annual bill of 43,200 ($5,227.43). However, a solar station costing one million yuan may save more energy and discharge less-carbon emission. The company had set up at least 1,000 base stations in Tibet Autonomous Region by the end of April. China Mobile clams that 78.79 percent of the electricity to power the base stations comes from solar panels, and the ratio is expected to reach 90 percent by 2010.
