Google to launch green phone booths to promote Google Voice

Google is making news with the addition of an exciting new functionality that allows completely free inbound and outbound phone service. The new Google Voice calling feature added to Gmail will allow people to use the free call service in the US and Canada. As part of a unique advertising campaign, Google has started rolling out the old-fashioned London red phone booths across the country and plans to install these booths at several universities and airports later this fall.

“No paying” is not the only good thing about these Google booths. Another interesting feature is that the booths are designed to be green too. They come equipped with solar panel, low-power hardware and an energy-saving light to illuminate the interior. The phone doesn’t have provision for any coin slot or card reader, rather calling is free as the phone is actually a VoIP telephone hooked up to Google Voice. In order to discourage phone hogs calls will time out after 20 minutes.
