David Belt, a developer of DIY swimming pools from trash, has unveiled his latest project “Glassphemy!” along the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn. The recycling installation is 20-by-30-foot cube made of bulletproof glass and steel. Participants stand on one end of the structure and fling glass bottles towards participants standing safely on the other side. When the pelting subsides, the broken bottles are recycled. At a preview party last week, it proved an equally satisfying experience for both, who love smashing things around for fun, and those who always wish that their aggression does not harm the environment.

Ideally, people will think it’s interesting, and they’ll want to do something with the broken glass. If not, it’ll be fun, and we’ll just break some glass.

Opening officially on May 20 to invited guests, the installation will utilize bottles donated by neighborhood bars. The broken glass collected will be recycled onsite. Belt has joined up with the design magazine Ready-made for a contest that asks readers for their recycling-related suggestions. People who send good recycling ideas to the Macro Sea may get an opportunity to visit "Glassphemy!".
