Visitors hailing to Vancouver for the Winter Olympic Games starting next week will be pleased to be welcome by hydrogen fuel cell buses. British Columbia Transit has deployed 20 of these green buses, providing visitors zero emissions transportation to the ski resort of Whistler. These buses set out as part of BC’s ongoing effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions require just 8 to 10 minutes of fill-up, giving a range of over 300 miles.

The chassis of these new hydrogen fuel cell buses was built by New Flyer, while Vancouver-based Ballard Power systems was brought in to provide the fuel cell system. This initiative will not only offer an eco-friendly ride to the visitors, but will also test how successful fuel cell technology is in cold weather conditions and mountainous terrain. The buses are said to be nearly twice as efficient as existing diesel buses, consuming 28 liters of hydrogen per 100 kilometers driven compared to 52 L/100 km for the diesels. BC Transit hopes to see their new buses functional for next 15 years.
