Millions suffer as floods and rains wreak havoc in China. As china’s typhoon season gets ready to hit the country, the rain havoc has affected nearly nine million people in the region.

Torrential rains have killed at least 66 people and made another thousand homeless. While few went missing in the storm, several houses have collapsed. And as the Chinese Met department forecast heavy rains and rockslides south of Yangtze, the situation looks quite grim.
Flooding has damaged 294,800 hectares of crops and destroyed another 53,000 hectares. The devastation has led to the evacuation of about 591,000 people.
Heavy rains triggered landslides have made the situation worse. Heavy storms cut off a railway link between Meizhou and Shantou in Guangdong leaving about 1,100 passengers stranded on Friday. Intense storms broke 29 reservoirs, 362 embankments, and 165 roads forcing 59 factories to suspend production.
Hunan province is on high alert as four successive days of rain have led to overflowing of the Xiangjiang River, which has reached its highest mark in 20 years.
The mammoth of destruction brought by rains, storm and floods have left millions stranded. Authorities are trying to reach to the affected by providing them food supply from helicopters. But, the severity of the storm at a few places has hindered any relief work.
Floods of such a vast destructive nature were witnessed in 1998, when nearly 3000 people were killed. Yangtze has for years been known as the Sorrow of China. Rightly so, for the people affected by floods it has brought sorrow.
