EVs could be recharged faster with Toshiba’s Charge Grid system

Excess load on grid during daytime and wasted energy from PV systems, both these factors combine to exacerbate the power crunch and frequent power outages. Anyhow, in order to tackle these hitches, Toshiba Corp announces the proposal of creating a Charge Grid. At the Smart Grid Exhibition 2010 in Tokyo, the tech-giant revealed the essentials of the novel system that is supposed to store surplus electricity generated by photovoltaic (PV) cells in detachable, rechargeable batteries.

While bidirectional inverters connect the electricity grid to Li-ion batteries, the rapid chargers create a sort of channel between batteries and inverters. If there is a power outage or an EV demands rapid charging, the surplus energy – from PV systems or grid – stored in Li-ion batteries comes into action. So, it will eliminate the need of installing high-voltage electrical substation equipments. Toshiba will still take a couple of years (maybe more) to bring the Charge Grid system into existence.
