Ethanol or Gasoline: Drivers' Dilemma

Irani SenOct 23 2005

The US is caught in a dilemma. Ethanol has emerged as the eco-friendly fuel, cheaper than gasoline, which hit the $3 mark. But the problem is E85 cannot be used in just any vehicle, for it attacks softer metal used in the manufacture of gasoline pumps and vehicles. According to reports, E85-fuelled cars run slower and in the long run, the users are probably ending up paying more than gasoline! Still, in Minnesota and North Dakota, drivers of vehicles designed for E85 are pumping more and more of the fuel, made up 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gas. Meanwhile, provincial governments are looking at legislating the addition of alcohol to gasoline as a way of reducing dependency on gasoline and to help cut harmful tailpipe emissions. So, eco-friendly fuel? Or more mileage? Drivers are clearly on a crossroad.
