If sources are to be trusted, a student of New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program has designed a dress that aims to protect the wearer from most environmentally toxic elements. Called the ‘Eight’, and resembling a giant, transparent jellyfish, this dress is a wake-up call to those who willingly ignore these perils on a daily basis.

The dress draws attention to itself not just because of its looks, but also for its larger objective of churning the thoughts of the people and creates a general debate, about the harmful aspects of the environment. It makes them look for solutions, which would differ from the traditional modes of treatments, to keep toxins at bay. Equipped with an oxygen tank, this ‘dress’ supplies its wearer with clean and fresh air, which is known to benefit health in general. Explaining the objective behind this design project, Ms Hana Marie Newman, the designer of the dress says,
The Eight not only cuts the wearer off from less-than-pristine conditions but also offers a visual cue about the hazards around us.
Humorous, crazy, a possibility, creative- whatever may be said about the dress, it certainly points out the areas, which we generally overlook, especially the damage we daily subject ourselves to. Since the dress has no apparent ecological downside, and brings health benefits to the wearer, it might catch the attention of some (read Lady Gaga, Paris Hilton and the likes), who wish to stand out in the crowd, and make heads turn in their direction, hopefully for a somewhat ecologically correct reason! The verdict on this could be: let it remain a novelty for the time being, but surely not let it be an exigency for the future.
