Hemp a highly efficient renewable material has been used by the researchers at the University of Bath to build first of kinds hemp house to test its properties as a building material. Used to make paper, clothing and car body panels the low carbon hemp has certain environmentally friendly properties which make it a useful eco friendly building material. Called the ‘HemPod’, the one storey highly insulating structure has been built from chopped woody core of the industrial hemp plant mixed with a specially developed lime-based binder.

Being porous, hemp traps air in the walls making them very well insulated whereas the lime based binder holds the hemp together to make the building fire resistant. Most importantly, hemp absorbs carbon dioxide as it grows and the lime takes in even more of climate change gas, thereby effectively reducing the building’s carbon footprint.
