Speedo, the premiere brand in swimwear has collaborated with ‘From Somewhere’ – the award winning fashion designers, that make eco-friendly fashion statements – to come out with a fashionable clothing line incorporating the surplus stock of the banned Speedo LZR Racer suits. The designs featured are very elegant, bright and wearable with a hint of the fifties – creating a spectacular party wear or a simple beachwear ensemble. Ever since FINA (Fédération Internationale de Natation), the regulating body for swimming, banned the use of Speedo LZR Racer suits right after the Beijing Olympics, Speedo was left with a huge stock that needed attention. Rather than disposing the stock, they planed on recycling it in a trendy and usable way. For the new fashionistas of this world, Speedo has succeeded in designing and creating a new fashion mantra by transforming swimsuits into evening gowns or the very trendy ‘Swimdress’. This year’s ‘Climate Week’ will see the launch of the trendy Speedo collection on the shelves at Selfridges stores on the 21st of March. There will also be an international showcasing of the fashion line at virtual stores on yoox.com (the official online retail partners of Speedo) on the 21st of April, which happens to be 'International Earth Day'. The merchandise will be featured in the ‘YOOXYGEN’ segment of the site.

The designers
It is a joint collaboration between Speedo International and ‘From Somewhere’ -the ‘green’ fashion designers, who have received many awards over the years in the fashion industry, to add a new collection to their already existing eco-friendly fashion clothing line.
The inspiration
As far as swimwear is concerned, Speedo is renowned for being a frontrunner coming up with amazingly innovative designs and technologies to endeavor in producing the best for swimmers. Speedo is synonymous with passion for swimming and keeping harmony with the water and its inhabitants and this is exactly why this swimwear giant opted for recycling rather than dumping its surplus swimwear.
The green factor
The revolutionary (last used by Michael Phelps in the Beijing Olympics) Speedo LZR Racer suits by Speedo have been upcycled to create some very fashionable dresses with a retro chic look – they suit all occasions, be it an elegant evening attire or a casual beach dress. To emphasize and maintain a green and eco-friendly approach, Speedo collaborated with ‘From Somewhere’ to devise that excellent way of utilizing their surplus stock. ‘From Somewhere’, is a hub of various fashion designers who create innovative and eco-friendly designs using recycled and waste materials – a perfect solution as opposed to creating landfills.
The fab factor
This is a great opportunity for the ‘From Somewhere with Speedo’ designer wear to inspire others to follow suit in the quest for salvaging materials and turning them into beautiful and trendy fashionable dresses. From the range of this collection, one can see how this phenomenal Speedo LZR Racer Suit that was introduced in 1998, has been transformed into a fashion statement in 2011! Furthermore, this collection has a very nostalgic element attached to it as Michael Phelps had donned it during the Beijing Olympics in which he had done outstandingly well and also because of the 91 world records broken by swimmers who had worn the Speedo LZR Racer suit between February 2008-October 2009.
The ensemble
Speedo has teamed up with the ethically-inclined ‘From Somewhere’ group of designers to come out with some stylish fashion garments made out of the erstwhile Speedo LZR Racer suits. The Speedo ‘reincarnated’ materials have given place to some retro fifties look which can be casually worn or become the showstopper for an evening party. The extremely popular‘Swimdress’ has a very casual and pleasant appeal to it – a delightful and trendy dress for anytime wear. All the dresses are very unique with great choice of colors and sharp feminine cuts. It truly is an innovative way to recycle material into something that can be appreciated by fashionistas world over!
