Eco cabins made from shipping containers revamp a Catalina campground

Gensler’s Richard Hammond has revamped the Scouts’ 85-year-old campground in Catalina Island’s Emerald Bay, 19 miles off the coast of Southern California by erecting a military-barracks-style cabin. The prototype cabin is made using reclaimed shipping container. We will soon see 20 more of these cabins making a perfect sustainable accommodation for the campers. The shipping containers donated by a Westminster-based construction company are shaped into interesting lodges by cutting their too to make window openings.

This attractive roof is made with silicone-coated fiberglass coming from a boat-cover manufacturer lets in ample amounts of daylight. It includes the LED lights that are powered by a solar PV system placed just outside the eco dwelling. Other green features include the recycled local wood deck and natural ventilation. This cute-looking cabin would make camping fun and eco-friendly.
