Houses made from recycled tires could be a common sight in devastated Haiti. The UN White Helmets Commission has asked Carlos Levinton, the Argentine architect to give a helping hand in reconstruction of Haiti after the earthquake. So, he finally thought of an ingenious idea of a dome-house made by using recycle tires. The government approval and White Helmets support has let him kick start the plan.
Levinton, who has built many structures with recycled material in the past, will re-build Haiti with anti-earthquake houses. He plans to construct the houses using recycled tires by making a large base with them and then installing a metal dome that will be covered with tarp or similar materials. But, such a construction would require huge amount of tires to be transported to the required location.
To meet terms with the tires requirement, Levinton is asking companies that discard large amounts of tires and organizations that could finance their transportation to help in providing roof to the homeless. He claims that the sustainable shelter can be built with just $50 and that too within a day. Both the Haitian government and White Helmets will sponsor the team trip to teach locals the building skills.
