The UK’s first disposable nappy recycling developer has joined forces with a new company to transform the recovered plastic into DIY products. The £12 million Knowaste plant at Tyseley, scheduled to open next spring, has tied up with SmallPlanet Building Products, Ltd, which will utilize the disposable diaper and adult incontinence products after recycling in making a variety of disposable products that include plastic cladding, roof tiles, decking, siding and other building products.

After the construction work is complete, the plant located on the Atlas Industrial Estate will recycle 36,000 tons of disposable diapers that would otherwise go into landfills, hence improving sustainability credentials. The plastic waste will shape into roofing products at Mailbox Mouldings in Stalybridge, Cheshire and the roof tiles will come in standard black, gray, green, red and brown. The company is looking forward to marketing and distributing the roofing products to roofing supply companies, building contractors, home builders and DIYers, hardware and gardening stores.
