Recently, several marine creatures died when lightening stuck them, while being trapped in an abandoned fish net. Environmentalists called for new laws in the aftermath of this incident. This has indeed raised a global outcry.

The sea life trapped in the discarded fishnet were dogfish, spider crab, wrasse, and even a cormorant. At least this is what an amateur diver reported.

All these sea creatures were trapped in a 60-meter long net.

I think this is an unacceptable event i.e. killing of marine creatures, some of which are endangered.

This is basically like an underwater death trap for all these creatures. The net was found at around 50 meters off Polhawn Cove at Whitsand Bay in south-east Cornwall.

The Environment agency said, a team would be deployed to the area to lift the net and prevent any future ‘ghost fishing’.

It seems like no one wants to take responsibility for the incident. Clearly, the fishnet has been left here by fishermen. Normally fishermen pick up their gear since it is pretty expensive.

The costs can be pound 80 to 100 per fish net. So, there might be someone other than the local fishermen who discarded the net altogether, causing this environmental loss. This incident calls for a marine bill in the parliament.
