With the advent of technology came computers that brought with them glittering compact discs. But, today we can see piles and piles of discarded CDs ending up in landfills. Bruce Munro has found a way to reviving waste discs into something extraordinary. The artist has crated a shimmering inland sea by bringing as many as one million unwanted compact discs into use.
Dubbed the “CD Sea,” the 120-square-meter carpet of glittering mirrors that reflect light from the sun and the moon looks like a giant painting on the grass. This unusual 10-acre canvas at Long Knoll Field in Wiltshire, England, received discarded CDs from all across the globe. More than 600,000 discarded CDs came from Brazil and California alone. Nearly 40,000 CDs donated by a man helped in pitching the inland sea will be on public view 24 hours a day. Many eco-consciouses volunteered to help Munro in his project. Grand Designs’ presenter Kevin McCloud was among the 140 volunteers.
