Dinosaur-era web-spinner discovered in amber

Irani SenJun 14 2006

It survived on insects, when the dinosaurs romped the earth. It is recently found trapped in amber - the spiral orb webs, Mesozygiella dunlopi. The amber is found to be from 121-115 million years ago. Thus, it is the oldest of its type ever discovered.

The orb weavers discovered as amber fossil, were found from Alava in northern Spain. The dinosaur-era spiral webs date back to the Lower Cretaceous. Evident from the great diversity of orb weavers found today, the spiral webs use an extremely successful strategy for catching prey.

The UK Royal Society journal Biology Letters described two of its specimens.
