Dentsu to unveil Chef’s Farm that can harvest 60 heads of lettuce daily

Dentsu Facility Management Inc. claims to harvest as many as 60 heads of lettuce per day with its latest product. Dubbed the “Chef’s Farm”, the small vegetable plant is capable of producing 20,000 heads of lettuce per year. This revolutionary plant will be unveiled this summer in Japan. It comprises of five 2,750 (W) X 1,270 (D) nutriculture beds that includes long and thin metal frames on which lettuce seeds can be planted in sponges.

As the veggies grow, the metal frames are moved from right to left by inches and the. Seeds are planted in the rightmost frame, while grown vegetables are harvested from the leftmost frame. Each bed uses 12 40W fluorescent lamps as lighting equipment. It is ideal for use in restaurants. Already exhibited at International Food Machinery & Technology Exhibition 2010 in Tokyo, the Chef’s Farm costs about about ¥8.3 million (approx US$90,552).
