David de Rothschild hopes to sail out the Golden Gate and across the Pacific to Sydney Harbor in his magnificent 60-foot catamaran made completely from recycled plastic. Dubbed as Plastiki, the high-profile project from the 31-year-old eco-celebrity intends to bring about awareness amongst people regarding environmental issues. Plastiki has already been successful in grabbing attention of news media in more than 30 countries. Nickelodeon's British website has carved out a permanent niche for Plastiki, while National Geographic Adventure has dedicated a full-time blogger.

It took David de Rothschild and a couple of dozen workers two years to repurpose everyday plastic into an ocean-going yacht. Built at his Bay Area headquarters, the green boat’s hull is made of a newly developed plastic that is easier to recycle than the conventional fabricated material. The voyage due to kick-start next month will see de Rothschild and the crew facing challenges imposed by ruthless seas, unpredictable weather, gigantic storms and tons of floating debris. The tiny Plastiki is not for meant for the 11,000-mile voyage, still de Rothschild hopes to do the impossible. All we can do is wish him good luck for his adventurous expedition.
