Darden Restaurants to seek LEED accreditation after green makeover

Darden Restaurants is all set to remodel its existing restaurants with a sustainable restaurant design initiative that will apply to all of it future constructions. Three of its largest brands: Red Lobster, Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse will strive to meet U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards.

Sustainable restaurant design initiative

The comprehensive plan includes upgrading of eight restaurants; Olive Garden in Jonesboro, Ark., is the first among them. Next to follow are one more Olive Garden and two Red Lobsters by 2010, and one Olive Garden, two Red Lobsters and one LongHorn Steakhouse by 2011.

Opened last month, the restaurant features maximum exposure to natural light, long-lasting LEDs that use seven watts of energy, reclaimed heating from condensing units of the HVAC system and freezer/cooler system to heat hot water, and other Energy-Star rated equipments. Moreover, the kitchens have low-flow water nozzles and automatic faucets that save water. Other restaurants will be modeled after it.
