Danish researchers to develop a micro-fuel-cell for hearing aids

Desh Raj SharmaDec 26 2009

If the researchers at Institute of Technology, DTU Nanotech, Department of Chemistry/iNANO Aarhus University and Widex A/S succeed in developing the zinc-battery-sized Micro Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (µDMFC), it will be perfectly possible to use hearing aids over a long period of time. A 10 seconds recharge will fill the nanodevice with 200-µl methanol and that is just sufficient for 72 hours of use. To realize it, researchers are employing MEMS technology and nano-based materials technology for the production of membrane and catalyst.

Just recently, the Advanced Technology Foundation granted 15 million DKK for their collaborative project dubbed MicroPowerDK. During the next 3 years, the researchers will conduct their researches in the clean room facilities at DTU Danchip in Lyngby, Denmark.
