Just few days back the 2008 Olympic City Beijing was severely criticized by the International Olympic Committee for not being clean as per the requirements. The city was not at all considered suitable for some of the major sports events. But now there is a sudden twist of comments. The British Olympic chiefs admired the country for having a perfect control over the vast pollution in the air. So, the sincere efforts have got their due.
China has minimized the number of cars on the city’s roads and shut down about 267 factories situated nearby. It has proved to be effective. Smog and algae in Beijing have been the major concern for being harmful for the athletes. But Simon Clegg, Britain’s Olympic mission chief is confident that the country’s arrangements for improvement will certainly deal with those issues. China is investing a huge resource to solve out the algae problem. It’s in fact impressive.
Britain’s athletes are free to express their personal political opinions in Beijing – demands Colin Moynihan, the BOA chairman. But of course, this should not violate the limits and rules of the IOC. They are expected to remain within their common sense while making remarks on the Chinese policy on Zimbabwe, Darfur or Tibet. The 205 countries all around the world have their own disputes and propagandas, but Olympic event is certainly not the place to call out all these.
Now we can be hopeful that pollution is not going to be a hurdle in success of Beijing Olympics. The Chinese government is still trying to make even better and clearer. Get ready for a pollution-free Olympic event.
