Cardboard City: A sustainable refuge in hour of need

Detroit-based industrial designer Adam Valmassoi proposes a weatherproof, secure, inexpensive and recyclable housing solution (concept) for millions who have no roofs over their heads. Dubbed as Cardboard City, the utopian place of living will comprise of numerous homes built with Z-Board – an extremely strong yet light weight material, made entirely out of recycled paper. The complex shape of these homes arises out of a simple assembly process that provides extreme protection from unstable weather conditions.

Each home flaunts watertight sides that are super-glued with a high grade adhesive. Main floorboard serves as a stable base for the walls and contains all furniture. Air vents lie on either side tucked into a cut in so no rain or other individuals can get in. Certain prefabricated grooves allow the door piece and the three wall pieces to slide into each other. It’s perfectly possible to lock the sliding doors and walls into place in the floorboard. Support beams act as shelving. Where a simple padlock locks doors from outside, a blocking board inside offers maximum security against theft. Aside from being inexpensive and featuring a low profile shipping, the flat packing homes tout a long shelf life.
