When CanUnDrum – a musical group from Santa Clarita Valley – takes center stage at the City of Santa Clarita’s Earth Arbor Day festival at Newhall Park on April 17, everyone stands a chance to witness how tunes arising from recycled 55-gallon buckets, PVC pipes, pots and pans create the sweetest music for one’s ears. Formed back in 2004, the group, consisting of three drummers, emanated in response to Six Flags Magic Mountain’s call to produce unusual melodies from seemingly unusual stuff.
A lot of people are confused because when we set up they assume we’re maintenance workers or painters. But once they start seeing what we’re doing they get caught off guard. People will hear music and follow the signs and, once they get there, they’re amazed at what they see, whether it’s an oil barrel, paint bucket or frying pan. We get a lot of smiles, a lot of amazement.

Salle, Mark Schnose and Ryan Young came together six years back and since then they have been performing at various venues including the LA County Fair and Azusa Pacific University. They keep scouring thrift stores, hardware stores and the freeways to gather the necessary stuff for their musical instruments. So, be it African, hip-hop, Scottish, rock ‘n’ roll, or some other nuance, they create them all.
