Canadian researchers pave the way for creating low-cost solar cells

A team of researchers at the University of Toronto in Canada proposes to replace gold with nickel in solar cells that acts as the critical electrical contacts to gather the electrical current produced by the colloidal quantum dot solar cells. The newly developed technology could help in bringing down the cell’s material costs by 40 to 80 percent. Dr. Ratan Debnath said that the team added one nanometer of lithium fluoride between the nickel and the dots to create a barrier that stopped the contamination and boosted the cells’ efficiency.

Before commercializing the technology, the research team will work on achieving a power-conversion efficiency of 10 percent, which is somewhere around 5 percent at present.
