Are you a smoker, and live in Calabasas? Then be aware before you light up a cigarette in public spaces. Or you may land up giving fines up to $500 as a pioneering public smoking ban went into effect Friday in Calabasas, with the enforcement coming from a higher authority: Mother Nature.
Calabasas is an upscale suburb perched on the western edge of the San Fernando Valley. Calabasas was generating international attention for what appears to be the nation's first ban on smoking in all outdoor public spaces. With this ban, though some residents breathe easier, others just fume.
