Burundi mobile operator Econet unveils new solar handset

Econet, a subsidiary of South Africa-based Econet Wireless International, unveiled a new rechargeable solar handset on Monday. This green initiative will put the mobile operator a step ahead of all the other mobile firms working in Burundi - U-com, HITS Telecom, ONAMOB, Africell and Lacell SU to name a few. The launch of the new eco-friendly handset is expected to boost business for the company by getting in nearly 800,000 new subscribers.

The new solar handset of Burundi mobile operator will ease things for the users. The subscribers will no longer have to look for power charging places; all they will have to do is juice up their handset with the sun’s energy. The company will retail their invaluable product for just $39. Econet has invested $40 million in its Burundi operations and has already been successful in attracting 80,000 users since April, while the goal is to have 100,000 subscribers signed up by the end of this year.
