WEAK, a group of architects has come up with a unique and intricately designed building realized on a wasteland of a ruined building site in-between the Shenzhen City Hall and an illegal workers camp. Created as part of the Shenzhen and Hong Kong bi-city Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture in Shenzhen, China, the Bug Dome derives inspiration from insects. The building made using bamboo incorporates the local knowledge from rural Guanxi brought into the city by the migrating construction workers for construction purposes.

Designed by by Marco Casagrande of Finnish architects C-Laboratory, Hsieh Ying-chun and Roan Ching-yueh, the cocoon like structure is weak, flexible and improvised to meet the site-specific conditions. With a stage and a fireplace, it has been designed to let nature step in. The Bug Dome is presently being used for underground bands, poetry reading, discussions, karaoke and as a lounge for the illegal workers from the neighboring camp. After the Biennale ends on 23 January, the structure will behave like an un-official social club for illegal workers from the Chinese countryside.
